On a rainy November night in 2008, I anxiously walked my horse. He was suffering from severe colic symptoms, and I repeatedly tried to prevent him from lying down and rolling and causing damage to his intestines. I let out a sigh as the rent-a-car seemed to glare at me from the ranch’s driveway, an unwelcome reminder of my recently totaled new SUV. I thought to myself, “How can it get any worse than this!” The next morning, bleary-eyed after spending the night with my horse at the veterinary hospital, I opened a few e-mails from clients outlining why they would be cutting back on spending. In my despair, I called a friend and valued counsel who asked me a simple and powerful question, “What is going on with you—really?”

My friend’s question spurred me to tap into the one resource that always supports me in times of stress – what I call my Source. You see, I’m one of those individuals who believe that my outside world reflects my inner world. In the midst of these dramatic events, I had become lost and overwhelmed and briefly forgot about this valuable resource – my Source!

I spent the rest of the day and part of the next getting quiet and checking in with myself through journaling and meditation. I learned that underneath all of these events was a dominant feeling of insecurity. Like many people, during the end of 2008, I was in complete fear mode over the external economic situation and had been internalizing this fear for months and largely running away from it.

Once I identified this feeling, I spent time with it, allowing myself to really feel my fear. Strangely enough, this began to create relief. I found upon closer inspection of this fear, or more importantly the driver of this fear—some core beliefs I held, were faulty and limited. By continuing to check in and quiet down, I began to develop evidence for myself of how, although these beliefs had served me in the past, they just did not cut it for the future. And so I began a slow and powerful shift toward more expansive beliefs about my financial well-being and security. I quickly noticed that as my inner beliefs shifted and I felt more secure, my outer world began to reflect this back to me. My car repair went by others’ description as “almost unbelievably smooth,” and new client work appeared. My horse also recovered stronger than ever.

Although I still encounter stressful situations, my response is to turn to my most valuable resource, sooner rather than later, to look for guidance and insight.

So the next time you’re faced with mounting concerns or negative events, try experimenting with the following:

1. Step back and slow down: Take some time to sit quietly, focus on your breath, and ask yourself, “What am I feeling?”

2. Get in touch with your core feelings: Spend some time journaling about how you’re feeling and why you feel this way—your beliefs underlying these feelings. For example, one of mine was, “I’m all on my own!”

3. Soothe yourself by tracking evidence of the opposite: Once you identify your core feelings and underlying beliefs, begin to look for evidence to the contrary. For the next several days, write down 5 examples of how the opposite of this belief is evident in your life. For example, I began to track all the support around me and how often people reached out to me.

Namaste!
